Rooming

Unlike resort-based family holidays we use a variety of accommodation on any one tour. When designing the tours we first decide where we want to go and what we want to see, then choose clean, comfortable and safe accommodation to fit the itinerary. This can mean that the accommodation choices in some places may be limited; it also means that the type of room used and standard of facilities may well vary from one place to another.

We always do our best to find rooms that suit your family, but it’s worth being aware of a few points before you make your booking. We’ve based our prices in the brochure and on the web site on two people sharing a twin room. That’s fine if you’re a family of four, or one adult and one child, but what if there are 3 or 5 of you?

If you’re a family of three – one parent with two children or two parents with one child – you’ll probably prefer a triple room. This is sometimes possible in the small, mid-range hotels we generally use, but unfortunately we can’t always guarantee availability. Sometimes a ‘triple room’ will in fact be a twin room with an extra, perhaps folding, bed squeezed in; sometimes it’s a room with one double and one single bed. If none of these options are available, you may need to use one twin (or double) room and one single room – in this case, you can decide which of you has the single. If you’re a family of five, exactly the same applies but you may be using a triple and a twin or two twins and a single room.

If you’re a family of two or four, we’ll usually accommodate you in two twin or double rooms (four-bed rooms are only rarely available). You decide which combination of adults and children you want to share each room. We’ll do our very best to give you rooms next door to each other, or failing that nearby, but we can’t promise this. If we arrive at the hotel and find rooms are further apart than expected, you can change the combination of who shares with who.

In exceptional cases only, where accommodation is limited, one or more of your family may need to share with members of another family (please refer to individual Trip Dossiers). In fact, often as tours progress new friendships develop, and you may find your children ask to share a room with other children they have met. If you’re happy and agree with this arrangement, your tour leader will be happy to try to change the accommodation we have booked, but please understand this isn’t always possible, particularly at the last minute. To help us with rooming arrangements please notify us of any preferences at time of booking.

One final point: the child’s price for the tour isn’t affected by the accommodation they have. You pay the same whether your child sleeps on a folding bed in your room or has a single room. The reason the child’s price (for children under 12 only) is lower than the adult price (on flight inclusive itineraries only - ask for details) is usually down to the difference in the air fares.

Hotel ratings
Small hotels are not always geared up to ‘western’ standards, and at times facilities can be less than salubrious; a lack of hot water, a shower that does not work, an erratic power supply. But there are compensations – a closer sense of reality, a better feeling of locale. We have no desire to stay at large-scale tourist complexes nor experience the cosseted fantasies of ‘deluxe’ class hotels. In general rooms are available from around midday and should be vacated between 10am and noon.
Accommodation Rating H+
Usually twin bedded rooms, normally with private facilities.
Accommodation Rating H
Usually twin bedded rooms, sometimes three or four bedded rooms may have to be used. Normally with shared facilities.

Local Style ratings
On some tours and nightstops we may use more local family run guesthouses, resthouses, apartments, residencias, jungle lodges, private homes, basic huts
in tribal villages, longhouses or mountain refuges.
Accommodation Rating L+
Usually twin bedded rooms, maybe some 3-4 bedded. Normally shared facilities.
Accommodation Rating L
Could be twin bedded but more usually multiple share or dorm style, sometimes
mixed sex, sleeping arrangements. Usually shared facilities.

Camping ratings
We provide all the necessary camping equipment; you may need to bring a sleeping bag or sleeping mat and other personal gear as detailed in your trip
dossier. We use 2-person tents (unless stated otherwise). Generally camp meals are included while camping or trekking and are usually prepared by our own cook
or leader. On some trips you may be expected to erect your own tent and help with camp chores. On a few trips we bivouac under the night sky.
Accommodation Rating C+
Designated campsite, usually with fixed WC/Shower. Possibly with fixed pre-erected tents on certain tours.
Accommodation Rating C
Natural, rough, wild, bush camp. Limited or no facilities. Temporary WC. Usually need to pitch own tents.
