In the Shadow of Vesuvius

8 Days In the Shadow of Vesuvius
Vesuvius, ruined cities, Capri & beaches

Introduction
A tour through a land of astonishing beauty and amazing sites, combining exploration with relaxation, the ancient with the modern, fertile seascapes with volcanic terrain. We set off from the atmospheric port of Naples, to Sorrento - dramatically positioned on its own peninsula - to explore the amazing remains of Pompeii, frozen in time, and climb to the crater rim of Vesuvius itself! Then to chic and cosmopolitan Capri with a visit to the famous Blue Grotto before enjoying walks on the stunning Amalfi Coast.

SORRENTO AND VESUVIUS
Our tour starts in Sorrento, dramatically positioned on a cliff-top position above the Bay of Naples. Great food and wonderful views beckon as we enjoy the evening passeggiata around the old, narrow streets. Sorrento makes a great base from which to explore the nearby ruins of Herculaneum, hermetically sealed under volcanic mud by the last great eruption of Vesuvius. Next we'll take the short walk up to the crater rim of Vesuvius itself for a peep inside and some superb views right across the bay of Naples!

POMPEII & CAPRI
One of the highlights is our time at Pompeii, an affluent Roman city frozen in time. Once home to 15,000 citizens, these remains are a true archaeological wonder - a ghostly photograph of the instant when, in 79AD, an entire community was overcome by a blanket of scorching ash. Much of this unique site is preserved virtually intact, from the roadside 'fast-food' taverns, to the political graffiti, to the many palaces and ornamental courtyards; the plaster casts of the victims and animals, gasping for breath, add to the eeriness. Next we journey to the island of Capri, an artist's haven. We visit the delightful Villa San Michele with its eccentric museum, and the famous Blue Grotto, as well as enjoying some free time.

EXPLORING THE AMALFI COAST
From Capri we take a ferry and then drive the short distance to one of the most celebrated stretches of the Mediterranean: the Amalfi Coast. The landscape is ideal for some gentle hikes along this rocky and lush shoreline, or perhaps inland, to the mountainous Valle delle Ferriere. Alternatively, we can take it easy on the beach or head for the idyllic village of Positano, a fitting end to this wonderful week in Italy.
