Introduction
Run by our old friend Thanos and members of his family,
our traditional Greek caique makes you feel at home the
moment you step aboard for this easy-going cruise. Time
and again we search out the quiet coves and harbours of
the islands off Attica, with plenty of opportunities to
swim, snorkel or venture ashore to explore forts and
ancient ruins.
ON BOARD M/V HERMES
After settling into our cabins for our first night on
board, we make for the island of Kithnos, famous for its
thermal baths and traditional folk customs. Although
sticking largely to our familiar itinerary, we will drop
anchor freely every few hours, enabling us to enjoy a
dip in the clear waters of the Cyclades. The dining area
also acts as a dayroom - ideal for board games or a good
read. The Isidoros II is motorised, though her sails are
unfurled if there's sufficient breeze on the longer
stretches.
OFF-BEAT CYCLADES ISLANDS
Heading north we visit a working monastery on rocky Kea
before continuing to the island of Evia, where we moor
in the long sweep of Marmari Bay. With several tavernas
and ice-cream parlours huddled around the quay near the
beach, this charming spot is an ideal place to take it
easy. Deserted Stira comes next - another favourite spot
for a dip - before we drop anchor in Panagia. Ashore, we
can hike inland to picturesque Almiro Potamos, a
red-roofed village in a broad plain surrounded by steep
mountains. Then cruise via Amarinthos where there are
several secluded coves for more snorkelling.
ACROSS THE GULF OF ATTICA
Next we stop at Eretria, one of the most powerful city
states of ancient Greece. The Temple of Apollo,
Acropolis and Gymnasium date back to the 4th century BC
and are well worth a visit. We can also walk to the
nearby medieval monastery of St Nikolaos with its
wonderful views over to mainland Greece. Finally, we
return to Rafina, still a vital shelter along this
stretch of coast.
