Winter Belarus & Ukraine
7 days - Hotels/Sleeper Train - Minsk & Kiev
Join us on an unusual and stimulating journey to a part of the world which
rarely receives travellers. Our two centre tour combines the contrasting cities
of Minsk & Kiev in the very heart of winter - wrap-up well! We explore the capital
of Belarus by metro, bus and foot - one of the purest examples of Soviet planning
& architecture in existence and then take an overnight sleeper train to Kiev, the
birthplace of Slavic civilisation, ranking in interest with Moscow and St Petersburg.
Minsk
Following the destruction suffered in WWII, Minsk was
practically rebuilt from scratch and is a testament to the vision of the former USSR.
We travel its broad boulevards and reflect on a bygone era - a city designed in the
classic Soviet mould and as yet untainted by any form of commercialism. There is time
to head into the countryside to Mir Castle, before leaving Minsk's monumental station
on our overnight train to Ukraine.
Kiev
Visitors are usually surprised by the beauty of Kiev,
not only of the monasteries and churches, but in its location. On a crisp, blue skied
winter day, the views from the hills on which it is built across the frozen river Dnepr
are to be savoured. The skyline is punctuated by golden domes - to enter into the churches
is to experience the heart of the Ukrainian soul. Pending permits we offer a sobering visit
to Chernobyl, and the now abandoned town of Pripyat which once housed the reactors' workers.
