 28 Days Rock, Kakadu, Reef

 

Day 1  Sydney to Griffith
Depart Sofitel Wentworth Hotel at 8.00 a.m. Today we travel to the rich Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area

Day 2  Murray River, Adelaide
Travel west through Mildura and along the Murray River. Pass through the Barossa Valley wine region to arrive in the city of Adelaide.

Day 3  Salt Lakes, Coober Pedy
Continue north to the Wadlata Outback Centre and see the displays detailing the Outback, its plants and its animals. We continue past massive salt lakes to the opal mining center of Coober Pedy.
Two Night Stay: Coober Pedy, Desert Cave Hotel. 

Day 4 Coober Pedy, Breakaways
Today we explore Coober Pedy, the world's largest opal producing center. Sightseeing includes a tour of an underground home, church and Umoona Opal Mine, with an opportunity to fossick for opals. What's more, you can keep what you find! We also visit the lunar landscapes of the Breakaways and tonight enjoy a gourmet barbecue dinner.

Day 5   Northern Territory, Red Centre, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Sunset Drinks
Enter the Northern Territory and continue through the arid landscapes into Australia's famous Red Centre, arriving at Ayers Rock Resort. Late this afternoon, enjoy pre-dinner drinks while watching Uluru (Ayers Rock) at sunset.

Day 6  Uluru (Ayers Rock), FREEDOM OF CHOICE, Desert Dinner
Tailor your Uluru (Ayers Rock) experience with a host of options on offer. Rise early to see Uluru at sunrise. First, choose to climb the rock or walk around the base. Walk into Mutitjulu waterhole, then our Freedom of Choice gives you even more exciting choices. On the Liru Walk, learn from Aboriginal custodians about the history of Uluru. Alternatively, choose the Harley Davidson tour, desert camel ride or see unique wildlife at the Predators of the Red Centre show. Depending on the morning activities you choose, there may be time to visit the Cultural Centre and join the Mala Walk. Your Tour Director can help you decide. This afternoon, we all travel to Kata Tjuta (Olgas) and explore Olga Gorge. Tonight is the 'Sounds of Silence' desert dinner, a gourmet experience.

Day 7  Kings Canyon, FREEDOM OF CHOICE TOURING, DINE AROUND DINNER
In Kings Canyon, take the guided walk to the rim for stunning views or choose the more gentle walk along the shaded floor. Tonight, choose from an 'Aussie-style' barbecue or a sumptuous buffet meal.
Accommodation: Kings Canyon Resort.

Day 8  Alice Springs, DINE AROUND DINNER
By special permit we journey through Aboriginal land visiting the settlement of Hermannsburg (subject to road conditions). Explore Angkerle (Standley Chasm) and Simpsons Gap. Continue to Alice Springs for your exciting Dine Around Dinner.
Two Night Stay: Alice Springs Resort.

Day 9  FREEDOM OF CHOICE
Choose a full day 4WD tour to Palm Valley. Alternatively, join the Dreamtime tour with the Walpiri tribe, visit the unique Desert Park or tour Glen Helen and Ormiston gorges in the morning, then play golf or tour 'The Alice' in the afternoon.

Day 10  Darwin
Enjoy a morning sightseeing tour of the city, including the Botanic Gardens, Fannie Bay and a visit to the acclaimed Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Afternoon transfer to Darwin Airport.

Day 11  Mataranka Thermal Pool
Visit the Daly Waters Pub for a drink and swim in the thermal pool at Mataranka. Continue to Katherine.
Accommodation: Katherine, Mercure Inn.

Day 12 Katherine Gorge, Kakadu
Join a cruise between the sheer cliffs of Katherine Gorge before continuing to Kakadu National Park.

Day 13 Aboriginal Guided Cruise
Join a guided cruise on the East Alligator River and learn of Aboriginal culture in Arnhem Land (subject to road conditions). View rock art at Ubirr.

Day 14  Jumping Crocodile Cruise
Enjoy a guided cruise on the Adelaide River before touring into Litchfield National Park for a refreshing swim in the natural pool at Wangi Falls. To Darwin.

Day 15  FREEDOM OF CHOICE in Darwin
Take in Darwin's sights then it's your choice between a harbor cruise, an afternoon fishing expedition or touring Darwin on the Tour Tub bus.

Day 16 Darwin, Cairns
Transfer to Darwin Airport for your flight to Cairns. Welcomed on arrival in Cairns.

Day 17  FREEDOM OF CHOICE
Tailor the day to suit your interests. Visit Rainforestation, witness an Aboriginal corroboree, see native wildlife and ride the Scenic Kuranda Railway. Alternatively, take a 4WD safari to remote Cape Tribulation or go white-water rafting.

Day 18 Quicksilver Barrier Reef Cruise, FREEDOM OF CHOICE, Port Douglas
Explore the Great Barrier Reef, with three exciting Quicksilver cruises to choose from. All cruises include a delicious lunch on board. Cruise to the Outer Reef on the 'Wavepiercer', go sailing on the 'Wavedancer' luxury catamaran or board the 'Quicksmart' for an adventurous day of snorkeling. Whichever cruise you choose, your Quicksilver guides will show you the reef's wonders in comfort and safety - and it's all included in the tour price. Tonight in beautiful Port Douglas, enjoy drinks and canapes before
our Dine Around Dinner.

Day 19 Skyrail, Wetlands, Dunk Island
This morning, ride the Skyrail Cableway over heritage rain forest. Follow the coastline to Mission Beach and transfer to Dunk Island, in the Whitsundays.

Day 20  At Leisure on Dunk Island
Relax or join in island activities.

Day 21  Hamilton Island
Our island adventure continues on a cruise through the beautiful Whitsundays to Hamilton Island.

Day 22 Hamilton Island, FREEDOM OF CHOICE, Sunset Drinks, DINE AROUND
Awaken to Whitsunday views and choose how to spend the day. Cruise to Whitehaven Beach, famed for its white silica sand, or enjoy a guided walk to Passage Peak. Alternatively, explore the island on a golf buggy or learn to catamaran, windsurf or paddle-ski. Or, perhaps take an island tour and visit the fauna park, or feed the fish on Catseye Beach, or hit golf balls at the aquatic driving range. Enjoy sunset drinks at the Yacht Club then choose from four of the island's top restaurants. Whichever option you choose, you don't pay an extra cent.

Day 23 Mackay, Rockhampton
Rejoin the coach this morning and continue through the tropical sugar town of Mackay to Rockhampton.
Accommodation: Country Comfort Rockhampton.

Day 24 World Heritage Fraser Island
Travel to Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, home to tangled rain forest and stunning inland lakes.

Day 25  FREEDOM OF CHOICE TOURING
Rise early to join an escorted birdwatching walk (optional). After breakfast, you have a choice of two 4WD tours or a whale-watching cruise (Aug. to Oct.). This evening enjoy our exclusive Bushtucker Barbecue on the Seabelle Deck.

Day 26 Fraser Island, Australia Zoo
Returning to the mainland, we pass the Glass House Mountains on our way to Australia Zoo. Made famous by its owner, 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo houses over 500 animals and gives you the opportunity to see wild-caught crocodiles in action.

Day 27 Coffs Harbour
Today we enter New South Wales, pass through Byron Bay and travel to Coffs Harbour.

Day 28 Sydney
Arrive Sofitel Wentworth Hotel, 5.45 p.m.
