4 day Red Centre 4 wheel drive

This four day, four-wheel-drive adventure explores the Red Centre, the very heart of Australia. From Alice Springs, set out across the vast red desert to explore the natural wonders of Palm Valley and Kings Canyon. Head on to Ayers Rock to experience the awesome majesty of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Day 1 Alice Springs
Collect your car upon arrival at Alice Springs Airport and drive to your chosen hotel. Overnight at Heavitree Gap (Budget/Standard), Alice Springs Resort (Superior).


Day 2 Alice Springs to Kings Canyon
206 miles 4 hours
Head out along the Stuart Highway and Larapinta Drive to the Finke River and the ancient palm trees of Palm Valley. Join the Mereenie Loop Road (permit required) and engage 4WD for the spectacular drive through the West MacDonnell Ranges to Kings Canyon. If time permits consider the Ridgetop walk (approximately one hour) around the Resort for great views, or watch the sunset on the distant mountain range. Overnight at Kings Canyon Resort (Budget/Standard/Superior).


If time permits while you are in Alice Springs, discover the wonders of desert ecology at the Alice Springs Desert Park, for £8.

Drive to Standley Chasm in the West MacDonnell Ranges to see the sun hit the floor of this narrow cleft at noon, setting the walls aglow.


Day 3 Kings Canyon to Uluru/Ayers Rock
189 miles 4 hours
Kings Canyon is located in the Watarraka National Park and is a huge formation of weathered rocks and beautiful waterholes. Here you have a choice of a short walk along the valley floor, or a longer more strenuous walk to the canyon rim for stunning views. Continue on to Ayers Rock Resort,make sure you arrive in time to enjoy the spectacular Uluru sunset. Overnight Outback Pioneer Lodge (Budget), The Last Camel (Standard), Desert Gardens Hotel (Superior).


Day 4 Uluru/Ayers Rock
Up early to catch the sunrise on Uluru/Ayers Rock. Drive around the base of Uluru/Ayers Rock where there are many interesting walks. Alternatively, if time permits, the 45 minute drive to Kata Tjuta/The Olgas to view the immense 36 domes is highly recommended. Return your 4WD vehicle to the Avis desk at Ayers Rock Airport. There is so much to see in this area - if you wish to add an extra night at Ayers Rock Resort please ask your Travelmood consultant for details.
