Where do you start?
Well, the first thing you need to do is decide
which places you want to visit. Don’t worry about your exact route at this stage, we’ll sort that out. Are some places more important than others?
It may help to make a list of your ‘must see’ destinations.
Next up, when do you want to go?
If you are flexible, then you may want to travel when the price of the airfares are lower,
usually between mid April (after Easter) to the end of
June. You don’t want to be visiting somewhere in the middle of the monsoon season either but we can advise you on that.
Can you change your mind?
Yes. You need to book
dates for all of your stopovers but you can then change
them at a later date - if you have already started on
your trip, there is usually a small fee to change your
dates. You can also reroute on most tickets, but check
the cost when you book, it's usually about £50.
Can you backtrack?
Not in so many words. You need to try and keep
travelling in roughly the same direction, but some zig-zagging is allowed
depending on your ticket. Once we have an idea of where you want to go, we can advise you of the best order to see each destination.
What is your budget?
The most basic round the world tickets can be bought for less than £700 including all your taxes but more extensive routings can be more than £2000.
Which is the best fare for you?
Best low-cost option:
Air New Zealand now
offers UK customers the world’s only daily
round-the-world service on one airline. The introduction
of a second daily service from London to Auckland via
Hong Kong, in addition to their LA route means you can
now fly either East or West - fares start at just £535
plus tax.
Best for Australasia:
The Qantas
World
Discovery Plus fare
allows up to 3 flights in Australia as well as 4
additional worldwide stopovers, fares start at £861 plus
tax.
Best for world coverage:
The
Star Alliance allows 15
stopovers and includes some of the worlds biggest
airlines so is great for visiting Asia (Singapore
Airlines, Thai Airways) and North America (United, Air
Canada).
Best for flexibility:
The
Great Escapade allows
unlimited stopovers up to a maximum mileage of 29,000
miles and you can add on extra miles if you like. Prices
start at £827 plus tax. A great way to make the most out
of this ticket is to include 'overland' sectors in your
routing, which means flying into one place and flying
out of another.
