This self drive itinerary gives you the opportunity to explore Malaysia at your own pace and time. The freedom to go when and where you want, whether you are travelling alone or with friends or family. It is certainly a great way to enjoy this exotic country. Driving and riding in Malaysia is fun and easy as they have an excellent road system (rated Asia's best) and driving is on the left. The varied cultures, scenery, attractions and the friendly people will make your trip truly enjoyable and memorable.

DAY 1 Kuala Lumpur to Malacca
91 miles 2.30 hours
Collect your car at KL Airport or have it delivered (additional local cost) to your city centre hotel. Drive to historical Malacca. This city offers over 500 years of a colourful history. Explore the city by visiting St. Paul’s Hill, the renowned Porta De Santiago, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and ‘Antique Street’. Overnight: Renaissance Hotel

DAY 2 Malacca to Cameron Highlands
237 miles 5 hours
Drive north to the hill resort of Cameron Highlands. Standing at 1,820 metres above sea level, it is synonymous with tea plantations. Perhaps visit the Orang Aski (Malaysian aboriginals) settlements, visit a tea plantation or have high tea at the old Scottish smoke house.

DAY 3 Cameron Highlands to Penang
169 miles 4 hours
Continue to Ipoh, the city of tin mines. Make a stop at the Sam Poh Tong Cave Temple; statues of Buddha among natural stalactites and stalagmites. Then to the royal town of Perak, passing the most beautiful mosque in the country. Admire the old and new Royal Palace before completing the days drive to Penang, crossing the Penang Bridge, the longest in Asia.

DAY 4 Penang
Full day to explore the Island of Penang. Relax on the beach or by the pool at the Parkroyal, pay a visit to Georgetown, the capital and renown for shopping and its architectural heritage or just take a drive and see the sights of Penang.

DAY 5 Penang to Kota Bahru
254 miles 6 hours
Cross to the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia to Kota Bahru. Located in the state of Kelantan this region offers rustic fishing villages, verdant padi fields and palm fringed beaches. It’s the most traditional state in Malaysia in respect of culture and handicrafts.

DAY 6 Kota Bahru to Kuantan
200 miles 4 hours
Start the day with a visit to the morning market of Kota Bahru before travelling south to Terengganu, passing through quaint villages and by idyllic beaches. Visit the ‘floating’ mosque before continuing to Kuantan via Kemaman and Cherating. Overnight: Swiss Garden Hotel

DAY 7 Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur
194 miles 4 hours
Return via the scenic Karak Highway to KL to complete your self drive itinerary. Return the vehicle to your hotel or KL Airport.


Please Note: This itinerary is not recommended during Dec - Feb due to the North-East Monsoon seasonal rain. Drivers must be over 23 years of age and under 63 years of age and have a full licence valid for at least 1 year. Cars are fitted with air conditioning and radio/cassette.
