What is an overland adventure safari?

An overland adventure safari is a safe way of travelling through Africa, with a group of like-minded travellers. It is not a bus tour but is a journey that allows you to experience Africa. You should be prepared to expect the unexpected and to return home full of fantastic memories of the people you have met and all the things you have seen and done. Not to mention the fantastic game viewing options.

Who goes on an overland safari?
People with a sense of adventure and fun, you also need to be 18 or over and be prepared to participate. The tours featured on the site attract people from all over the world with many of the tours attracting a high proportion of UK, Australian, New Zealand and European nationals. Many people travel alone as this type of holiday is a perfect way to meet people but equally it’s perfect for groups of friends or as a couple.

What type of vehicle will I be travelling in?
It really depends on the tour that you book but in general overland vehicles are custom built and designed to deal with travel conditions in Africa. These vehicles have been designed, modified and built to give the greatest security and comfort to you, the passenger. Vehicles are fully self sufficient with all cooking and camping equipment, exterior and interior lighting, roll up PVC sides with windows, lockers, long range fuel tanks as well as large water tanks.

Where will I stay on an overland safari?
Most overland adventure safaris are camping trips. You can expect to sleep in a two-person tent with sewn-in ground sheets, and a separate flysheet. Most of the time you will be staying in campsites, these have sprung up with the ever-increasing demand of the overland companies. At times you will bush camp, usually when you cannot travel any further or there is no permanent campsite near by. A bush camp is something special to remember as you are truly out in the bush.

What are the crew like and what do they do?
Some safari companies have three crew members some have two. They are the Driver, the Trip Leader and the Safari Cook. All of the crew have a love of the countries they travel in, which is one of the most important requirements for your trip. Most of the crew have spent quite a few years travelling through Africa and have extensive knowledge of the countries you are travelling in. We feel that their enthusiasm as well as their experience will guarantee you have an unforgettable trip.

What will be expected of me?
Most things are done as a group and you will take it in turns to help with the cooking, buying the food in local markets and doing the daily duties. Obviously you have the back up of the crew to help with this as well.
